Middle Class:  The American dream of economic security has become harder to realize in recent years. High gasoline and energy prices, increasing health care costs, potential job loss, and natural disasters are squeezing families and small businesses. That is why I support new jobs in renewable energy development, rewarding individuals and businesses who play by the rules, affordable health care, tax relief for middle class families, and education that prepares our students for the future.

Rural Iowa:  I was born and raised on a farm in rural Iowa. Our agricultural and rural areas are vital for our state.  I support renewable energy development, tax incentives for businesses to locate to our smaller communities, and oppose an increase to the gas tax.  Working for a better economy, new jobs, affordable health care, and strong schools are important so that our rural areas and small communities improve and thrive.

Education:  Iowa has a strong tradition of excellence in education. As a former teacher and coach for forty years I understand and believe in the importance of education. Our students deserve a first-class education and will need one to compete for the jobs of the future. We need to make sure students meet the standards required to succeed in college and the workplace. Attracting and retaining good teachers and providing professional training is also essential for our schools to succeed. College tuition and job training need to be accessible for middle class families so that our students are prepared for jobs in the global economy. I will continue to support Iowa’s educational programs and keep education a top priority.

New Jobs and Renewable Energy:  High gasoline and energy prices have put a squeeze on the middle class. Iowa should continue to be a leader on renewable energy and we can become an energy independent “green” state. Having done post-graduate research in the field of biotechnology, I believe in the possibilities that renewable energy can offer. Expanding renewable energy development in biofuels, wind, solar, and geothermal will help end our dependence on foreign oil, create new jobs, and ease the price of energy. Promoting green technology in our homes and businesses and providing job training will also help put Iowa on track to energy independence.

Health Care:  My wife, Michelle, is a nurse at the Cromwell Children’s Unit of the Mental Health Institute in Independence. She and I understand the needs and struggles people face with health care. Health care costs have soared recently and are hurting many families. We need to provide coverage for Iowans, especially children, put an emphasis on health and wellness, and make insurance affordable for families.

Environment and Quality of Life:  The recent flooding will pose real challenges for our environment. Iowa’s natural resources are among some of the best in the world. Having clean air, water, and soil is essential to our state’s economy. Taking care of our environment is also important to keep young people active and interested in Iowa. Promoting recreational opportunities, improving our state and local parks, and working to attract visitors to Iowa will have a positive impact on our quality of life.
